Virtual Grill or Chill #February 2021

MaGIC pitching session Grill or Chill is Back! this time around we will be conducting Grill or Chill virtually. So take a seat, relax and chill from the comforts of your home while enjoying the session.

Meanwhile, we’re calling startup & entrepreneurs who have an idea to solve a real problem to pitch and validate your idea.

Grill or Chill (GoC) is a platform for startups to showcase their products and get valuable feedback from experts in the startup ecosystem.

In Partnership with Universiti Malaya Centre of Innovation & Commercialization (UMCIC) Universiti Malaya Centre of Innovation & Commercialization (UMCIC) is the technology transfer office (TTO) for University of Malaya. It is a centre responsible for managing the university’s intellectual property and technology transfer activities. We welcome partners in exploring technology development and licensing opportunities in technology domains ranging from Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical, ICT, Digital Tech, Green Tech as well as a wide variety of services we are traditionally renowned for.

UMCIC provide excellent facilities to the industry such as wet and dry labs. We incubate our startups and academia innovations through various programmes i.e. UMXcelerate programme, UMX launchpads etc. which aims to foster innovation transfer in a wide range of fields, along with premium space available for tech start-up partners in our incubator.

UMCIC integrated and research-centric approach to technology development comprises collaboration with industry, investor and inventor; intellectual property management and legal advice; technology commercialization through venture creation and licensing; technology accelerator programme; and also Business Pods and Startups creation.

UM DEEP TECH (UMDT) - A SIGNATURE PROGRAM ORGANIZED BY UMCIC

UM Deep Tech (UMDT) is a six-month unique accelerator program to bring the university technology from lab to market. It was launched in March 2020. The programme aims to enhance the university’s entrepreneurial function and to nurture the University Startups through financial support, mentorship, exposure to investors pitching and market validation guidance.

Nanosense - Nanosense detects food contamination is less then one (1) minute with a high accuracy and sensitivity and most importantly it’s easy to use and inexpensive asities aptamer molecule that can detect these bacteria simultaneously without compromising its rapidity and sensitivity, with a multiplex food screening biosensor .

12. Nanoguard - Nanogard develops self-cleaning coating based on nanotechnology, that can protect car-windshield and environment as well with a self-cleaning system naturally

Ts. Muhammad Lofty Abd Karim, RTTP - Senior Project Consultant , CEO's Office, MaGIC

Lofty has more than 24 years of professional work experience spans across manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, product engineering, process improvement, product and project management, project investment evaluation, technical due diligence, intellectual property, and innovation management with wide exposure in government and industry sectors. He has a Master of Engineering Management from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Marquette University in Wisconsin, USA. He is also a Certified Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) under Alliance of Technology Transfer Professional (ATTP) and a Professional Technologist under the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT). He started his career as an Industrial Engineer with Otis Manufacturing Company Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned American company under United Technologies Corporation (UTC). Later, he joined Schindler Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. - a Swiss-owned company - as one of the pioneer employees in setting up the company’s first production line in Ipoh, Perak. Following that, Lofty further enhanced his career by joining Ericsson Mobile Communication Sdn. Bhd. (later known as Flextronics Technology Sdn. Bhd.), as a Product Support Engineer in the project management department. Then, Lofty served Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PNS), a government owned Financial Institution, as a Technical Analyst responsible for technical due diligence and project evaluation. Right after that, Lofty joined SIRIM Berhad as a Consultant for the Techno-Economy & Commercialisation Centre. In SIRIM, he was tasked with providing consultancy within SIRIM and for enterprise and entrepreneur development of the SMEs in Technology Needs Assessment, SME Technology Commercialization Initiative and R&D Commercialization. Prior to joining MaGIC, Lofty was serving Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) for the last 9 years and was tasked with conducting technology evaluation and identifying Intellectual Property Rights from local Public Universities and Public Research Institutions to accelerate commercialization. He was transferred to PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn Bhd in 2014, a wholly owned subsidiary of AIM, as a Vice President, and as a CEO of PlaTCOM Ventures since May 2019. During the tenure in PlaTCOM, he was leading and managing a team of Technology Transfer Professionals, Intellectual Property Experts and Support Services Specialist in providing end-to-end facilitation and expertise on discovering and supporting innovations by assessing ideas, exploring the potential, and turning the best ones into successful products and services. Lofty is now a Senior Project Consultant, under CEO’s Office in MaGIC. He is tasked to provide guidance and expertise in Innovation & Technology Commercialisation with the new MaGIC’s strategic direction of focusing on Technology & Innovation.

Dr. Ng is well experienced in the translation of R&D investment into revenues. He is analytical, creative and is well experienced in early-stage investment, technology evaluation, market due diligence and facilitation of commercialisation activities. A graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University, Dr. Ng has more than 13 years’ experience in innovation and technology investment. As the Vice President of Strategy & Investment, Dr. Ng holds overall responsibility in assessing organizational performance, developing achievable goals and implementing processes that improve organisational effectiveness and build a sustainable competitive advantage. He is also equally responsible for a multitude of responsibilities under Cradle investment portfolio.

Dr. Nurrul Iiyana is a Certified Professional Coach from MIM and acquires more than 15 years' experience in various areas, which include investment, capital market, finance education, and entrepreneurship. She is a Ph.D. graduate from the International Centre of Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF). Her Ph.D. thesis is on 'Financial Market Integration and its Risk Sharing Implication In Islamic Countries. She is a junior member of Chartered Islamic Finance Professional. She is currently active in assisting many Small Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) via her organization, Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia (CGC) to grow and succeed in penetrating new market and financial access.
