[MaGIC Webinar] Transfer Pricing Tips for Startups

In light of the ongoing Movement Control Order (MCO) and MaGIC’s recent survey having conclusive data that only 2.9% of start-ups are confident in surviving through MCO -  MaGIC will be bringing you its Webinar series, a platform for online live sessions with industry experts and entrepreneurs to shed light on the various ways to strategise and thrive in a time of crisis, such as the one brought about by the COVID-19.

Each topic in the series will dive into the different areas of business and offer tools and insights for business sustainability, followed by a Q&A session. We at MaGIC will strive to provide a platform of support for our entrepreneurs as best we can.

The Session

With the world becoming increasingly globalised, it makes sense for startups to pursue for regional and global expansions. Even more so when expansion provides them with the opportunity to multiply revenues when crossing borders.

This is especially true for tech startups, who often go global relatively quickly with technology evolving at breakneck speed. And for these Startups, intellectual properties are easily, and sometimes unknowingly, exchanged among the Startup’s related entities in foreign jurisdiction.

An area of taxation, in between different tax jurisdictions is known as transfer pricing, the pricing arrangements between related parties for intercompany exchanges.

But why should Startups be concerned about transfer pricing when it's all the same business anyway? Startups should be concerned as Tax Authorities do not see the Group as ‘One Company’. Transfer Pricing is about pricing transactions assuming that two companies of the same group are independent and separate.

In this webinar session, Transfer Pricing expert Becky Nguyen will be taking us through the basics of transfer pricing and why it matters when expanding globally
